This work deals with the modification of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) into polycarbonate-poly(ε-caprolactone), PC-PCL, copolymer through in situ polymerization of ε-caprolactone by reactive extrusion. In details, it consists in synthesizing first active titanium-polycarbonate [Ti(OPC)4] sites after an exchange reaction between PC and titanium n-propoxide, and then in polymerizing ε-caprolactone from these sites to obtain PC-PCL copolymers. The reactions were first carried out in solution at 50 °C to evidence reaction mechanisms and kinetics data. Then in a second step, these reactions were achieved during the PC extrusion processing. Final compounds were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and SEC analysis. The evolution of their chemical structure was reached through the determination of the block lengths and the degree of randomness B. The copolymers synthesized by extrusion present a more pronounced statistical character than those obtained in solution. However, by judiciously modifying the temperature profile, a certain block character can be obtained underlining the specificity of the reactive extrusion to synthesize original copolymers.
