A new perylenebisimide–tetraphenylethene dyad (1) linked by imidazolium/amide anion binding sites at the imide position of the PBI core, has been designed and characterized. The recognition ability of 1 toward anions has been investigated in detail by UV–vis and emission spectroscopy. In CH3CN solution, this probe shows a specific fluorescence quenching response toward H2PO4− (Pi) and HP2O73− (PPi) over other test anions (F−, Cl−, Br−, I−, AcO− and HSO4−). The UV–vis titration, emission titration, 1H NMR titration, Tyndall and DLS experimental results reveal that the binding of Pi or PPi leads to an anion-induced aggregation of the probe with a fluorescence quenching. The probe has been successfully applied to the detection of Pi and PPi in a form of test paper. Furthermore, probe 1 still shows a good fluorescence response toward PPi even in competitive H2O–CH3CN mixtures which can discriminate PPi from Pi and other anions.
