The reactions of cis,cis-1,3-, cis,trans-1,3- and 1,4-cyclooctadienes with platinum(II) and palladium(II) in various solvent systems have been investigated. The occurence of rearrangement of the coordinated dienes depends on the nature of the solvent. However, in RhI, IrI, RuII and Mo0 systems, coordinated dienes always rearrange to the more stable 1,5-cyclooctadiene. New cyclooctadiene- metal complexes are reported along with new synthetic routes to some known cyclooctadienemetal complexes. Ligand exchange reactions of the diene-metal complexes and some reactions of coordinated cyclooctadienes are also described.
