The previously reported compound “Li7TaN4” [1–4] is a mixture of two phases. In addition to the already described Li16 Ta2N8O [5], single crystals of the second phase identified as Li7TaN4 were obtained. Li7TaN4 (a = 9.825(2) Å, Z = 8, spacegroup Pa3̄) crystallizes in a superstructure of antifluorite type. Thereby tantalum is coordinated tetrahedrally by nitrogen (first coordination sphere (CS)) and octahedrally (second CS) and cubooctahedrally (third CS) by lithium.
