A new type of cationic-modified Silica gel (cas 112926-00-8) (CM-SG) adsorbent was prepared and its structure and properties were characterized by FI-IR, elemental analysis, XRD, BET, SEM–EDX, particle size and Zeta potential analysis. The results showed that the cationic polymer EPI–DMA had been successfully grafted onto the surface of SG. The Zeta potential values of CM-SG were positive in a wide pH range. Static adsorption experiments showed that the dye adsorption process of CM-SG was conformed to the second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, and its dye adsorption capacities were influenced by the adsorbing technological parameters. Dynamic adsorption experiments showed the adsorption capacities of CM-SG for Reactive black 5 and Reactive red 239 could be reached up to 190.0 and 178.2 mg/g, respectively, which were over 320 times more than that of SG, and could persist five cycles of adsorption–desorption operations with adsorption capacities more than 80%. The electrostatic interaction between dye anions and positive charge on the surface CM-SG was the main mechanism for the high sorption.
