The effect of molybdates, in the concentration range 0.001–0.1 mol dm−3, at pH 10, 7 and 3 has been studied using potentiodynamic and impedance methods. Epp is seen to shift as much as 450 mV depending on the chloride ion concentration. The competitive adsorption of chloride and molybdate anions at the flawed regions followed by oxidation/reduction has been proposed as the passivating mechanism.
