In this work, a simple, selective, sensitive and inexpensive colorimetric sensor has been developed for the detection of iodide ions using green tea (Camellia sinensis) synthesized silver nanoparticles (tea-capped AgNPs). The mechanistic route relied upon the binding of iodide ions to the surface of biosynthesized AgNPs. This binding led to decolorize the yellow color of AgNPs solution along with the disappearance of characteristic surface plasmon (SPR) band at 405 nm. The mechanism of interaction of iodide with AgNPs has been discussed by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The biosynthesized AgNPs were capable of detecting iodide in the range from 1 × 10− 7–2.5 × 10− 5 M, which exhibited good linear relationships between concentration and absorption change with the correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.994. The detection limit obtained by this tea-capped AgNPs was 6.5 × 10− 8 M which is comparable or some better than those obtained by previously reported chemical reduction methods. Moreover, the tea-capped AgNPs demonstrated a selective colorimetric response for iodide in the presence of other potential interfering ions like Br−, F−, Cl−, CH3COO−, NO2−, NO3−, H2PO4− and SO4−. Compared to other colorimetric methods designed for the detection of iodide ions, the proposed method has combined the features of good sensitivity and selectivity, and environment-friendly and cost-effective nature. More importantly, the method does not require any additional chemicals and specific reaction condition.
