This work presents a Lovibond comparator device based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for colorimetric screening of poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (poly-DADMAC) in raw and treated potable water. The colorimetric disk printed on the plastic slide was fabricated with 14 nm AuNPs and then inserted in the plastic compartment of the Lovibond comparator. Upon the addition of poly-DADMAC with the concentration varying from 1 to 10 mg/L onto colorimetric disk, there was aggregation and observable color change from red to blue. The Lovibond comparator was verified with spiked water samples from different sampling points in and around Mhlathuze area located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Preliminary results showed that this colorimetric Lovibond comparator can visually detect poly-DADMAC at lower concentration of 1 mg/L. The color development triggered interaction of poly-DADMAC with citrate stabilized AuNPs was first evaluated on normal paper and then optimized by UV–visible spectrophotometer. The developed method showed a linear range from zero to 200 µg/L with the correlation coefficient of R = 0.9942.
