Single crystals of Cs8Nb22O59 and Rb8Nb22O59 have been grown by pulling from melts contained in platinum crucibles. The two materials are shown to be isomorphous and to exhibit strikingly different physical behaviour. Cesium niobate is a stable material, and some dielectric and optical data are presented. The rubidium analogue is unstable, disintegrating after growth into a microcrystalline powder, preventing the measurement of properties. The mechanism for this behaviour does not appear to be associated with hydrate formation or attack by moisture. Attempts to prepare large crystals of Rb2Nb8O21 were unsuccessful.
