The author has previously demonstrated that the birefringent plates formed in amebae are triuret (cas 556-99-0) (carbonyl diurea) and that the isotropic crystals from amebae, both plates and bipyramids, recrystallize from water as triuret. Physical separation and microanalysis of native crystal preparations and of the contaminants present in such preparations have shown that the chemical composition of the native isotropic crystals is the same as that of triuret. The native crystals form an equilibrium with a saturated triuret solution and do not dissolve. The two crystal types differ in infra-red absorption, apparently because of differences in the environment of vibrating groups caused by the different crystal lattices. The molecular configuration and the crystallography of this new nitrogen excertion product are discussed.
