The complexes Cu4OCI6(Ph3P)4 · 0.5Et2O, Cu4OCl6(Ph3As)4, Cu4OCl6(Ph3As)4 · Et2O, Cu4OCl6(MeOH)2(Ph3As)2, Cu4OCl6(Ph3Sb)4 · Et2O and Cu4OBr6(Ph3P)4 · 1.5Et2O were prepared and isolated. The electronic and IR spectra indicate a tetrameric structure with trigonal bipyramidal coordination of the copper(II) atom. On moderate heating the complexes undergo decomposition with reduction of copper(II) to copper(I). The influence of their specific structure on the stabilization of copper(II) relative to copper(I) is discussed.
