Seventeen bis-carboxylate derivatives of bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)titanium have been prepared by the reaction of bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)titanium dichloride with the appropriate sodium salts of substituted benzoates. They have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR. When treated with electrophilic reagents such as SOCl2, CH3COCl and HX, (CH3C5H4)2TiX2 were obtained. The crystal and molecular structure of bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)bis(o-methylbenzoate)titanium has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic group P21/c with four molecules in a cell having a = 8.098(3), b = 28.747(4), c = 10.374(3) Å, β = 95.48(2)°. The molecules have a distorted tetrahedral structure in which the titanium atom is attached to two η5-CH3C5H4 groups and two monodentate o-methylbenzoate ligands (TiC, 2.323–2.409 Å; TiO, 1.979(3) and 1.961(3) Å; OTiO, 90.5(3)°; (cent-CH3C5H4)Ti (cent-CH3C5H4), 130.1(3)°.
