We present electrical resistivity and a.c. susceptibility data for polycrystalline RSi2 compounds (R ≡ rare earths and yttrium). Measurements have been carried out from room temperature down to 4.2 K. Our data show an antiferromagnetic transition for all compounds, except when R La, Y, Yb, Ce and Sm. The ordering temperature TN varies from 39 K (GdSi2 and EuSi2) to below 4.2 K (TmSi2 and ErSi2), and the variation of TN over the series is qualitatively described by DeGennes' rule. In the ordered state, resistivity is found to have a T3 dependence at the lowest temperatures, and Curie-Weiss behavior is observed in the paramagnetic state. The low temperature T3 resistivity in antiferromagnetic compounds is interpreted as being caused by electron-magnon scattering. Another interesting feature is a second transition below TN observed for GdSi2, PrSi2 and EuSi2. The nature of this transition is not known at present.
