The Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of monolayers of Docosanoic acid (cas 112-85-6) from aqueous subphases containing 2.5 × 10−4 M CdCl2 has been studied in detail as a function of pH. We have measured the force exerted on freshly cleaved mica substrates during transfer, enabling the dynamic contact angle to be calculated. Changes in contact angle are discussed alongside the values of the transfer ratio. Deposition is Z-type (out-strokes only) at low pH but changes to Y-type as ionisation (pH) increases. The transfer ratios increase to 1 for both out- and in-strokes as the pH increases to 8.0. It is demonstrated that transfer of material during in-strokes is only possible when the contact angle (measured into the aqueous phase) is greater than 90°. The lower the contact angle during out-stokes (always less than 90°), the higher transfer ratio. Relaxation of the contact angle is quite marked only for out-strokes.
