Magnesium mono- and triuranates were prepared by ignition of MgCl2 with U3O8. A non-stoicheiometric phase, as yet uncharacterized was formed when SrCl2 was annealed with U3O8(Sr:U = 1:1). Barium mono- and diuranates were prepared by sintering barium carbonate and U3O8. Phases not fully identical with those reported by other authors, were obtained by ignition of strontium and barium uranyl acetates. New reflexion planes on MgUO4, MgU3O10 and BaUO4 were found and indexed in known lattice parameters. Infra-red spectra were obtained for all uranates. It was found that infra-red spectroscopy could be used as a rapid and sensitive analytical method for the qualitative determination of uranates.
