A platinum electrode surface has been anodically oxidized in 1N H2SO4. The electrode was transferred into an ultrahigh vacuum chamber and the surface compound formed was analyzed by electron energy loss spectroscopy. The absence of the characteristic vibrations of water showed, in accordance with XPS measurements, that the adlayer is not a hydrated platinum oxide, but rather a hydroxide Pt(OH)4 with energy losses at 600, 1350 and 2950 cm−1. Gradual thermal decomposition at 380–420 K just leads to disproportionation into Pt oxide and water of hydration. At even higher temperatures of 700 K, bands characteristic of Pt oxide (750–780 cm−1) and adsorbed oxygen (460 cm−1) are observed.
