Adsorptive desulfurization is a greenway for the sulfur removal from fossil fuels owing to their ambient operating conditions and its recyclable usage. N-doped carbon has been used as adsorbents for the removal of sulfur both in the gas phase and liquid phase. In this paper, the bifunctional mesoporous carbons with N-doping and Cu-decoration were prepared to capture the sulfur from model fuel. The introduction of the Cu species endowed the adsorbents with the π-complexion to the sulfur compounds. The doping of the nitrogen enhanced the interaction with the aromatic sulfur compounds through increasing electron density of the adsorbents. Furthermore, the doped nitrogen promoted the decomposition of the nitrate and reduced the Cu species to Cu(I) which is helpful for the removal of the sulfur compounds. The obtained bifunctional Cu-decorated N-doped carbons exhibited high microporous volume (0.09 cm3 g−1) with 10% loading of the Cu species and the adsorptive ability for benzothiophene reached 0.58 mmol g−1. Particularly, the adsorptive desulfurization capacity of this material maintained the 86% of the fresh one at the fifth recycled use.
