A detailed physicochemical study has been carried out on tetracoordinated complexes of the type Ni[P(CH3)3]2X2 (X = CN−, NO2 −, NCS−, Cl−, Br−, I−, P(CH3)3).The experimental results (molecular weight, magnetic moment, conductivity, infrared, Raman and electronic spectroscopy) are in agreement with a trans-square planar geometry. An assignment of ligand field and charge transfer bands is proposed. This is facilitated by low temperature (77 °K.) measurement and by comparison with the analogous pentacoordinated complexes. Comparison between electronic spectra of the analogous tetra- and pentacoordinated complexes shows large differences. Thus, electronic spectra criteria provide a means of distinguishing between penta- and tetracoordination in low spin nickel(II) complexes.
