The isomerization of the 1,3-hexadien-5-yne radical cation to the benzene structure, which is known to have a low energy barrier, is studied by charge exchange ionization. Unexpectedly, no simple relation between the recombination energy of the reactant ion and the fraction of isomerized ions could be observed. It is suggested that charge exchange ionization proceeds through a collision complex and is immediately followed by isomerization within this collision complex. A speculative triple-minimum potential energy diagram is proposed which may at least explain part of the experimental results.
