Core-shell particles were formed from aqueous solutions of antimonic and silicic acids. Three methods were developed for preparing the particles: (i) mixing freshly prepared antimonic and silicic acids (A); (ii) mixing potassium salts of antimonic and silicic acids followed by protonation by ion exchange (B); (iii) hydrolysis of a tetraethoxysilane solution in ethanol by an aqueous antimonic acid solution (C). Methods (A) and (B) led to three-dimensional core-shell particles with the β-antimonic acid structure. Three-dimensional core-shell particles were formed only through route (C) when alkoxysilane was in excess. Without an excess of alkoxysilane, fibrous silicic particles including antimony were obtained. The nature and size of the particles are closely dependent upon the reaction rates (polymerization, mixed compound formation).
