Four rare-earth dicarbides and a yttrium carbide (average composition YC1.6) have been prepared and hydrolysed using water or mineral acids. The hydrolysis products, gaseous hydrocarbons, were determined using gas-liquid chromatography. The preparation from the oxide and carbon appears to proceed via the metal, and the results of hydrolysis are discussed from the nature of the carbide, the primary and subsequent free-radical reaction steps. In particular, the unusual results with nitric acid, due to the chain-terminating properties of nitric acid are mentioned.
