This study investigates the dispersion of 1 wt.% of C.I. Pigment Violet 23 particles in acetone using a supercritical fluid-assisted dispersion process (SFAD) with commercial dispersants. The effects of several key factors on the mean size of pigment dispersoids were investigated. These factors included the formulations of dispersants, the amount of adsorbed dispersants on the surface of pigment particles, and the temperature and pressure during the holding stage in the SFAD process. As evidenced by the experimental results, the isotherm adsorption of dispersoids was well correlated with the Langmuir isotherm model. Increasing the amount of Disperbyk-2150 dispersant adsorbed on the surface of pigment particles and holding the SFAD process at a higher temperature and pressure are both good for improving pigment dispersion in acetone.
