  • Flip–flop motion of the vinyl group in crystals of 4-Vinylbenzoic acid (cas 1075-49-6)
  • Add time:08/02/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

The crystal structure of 4-vinylbenzoic acid has been determined at 363 K. By comparison with the molecular structure at low temperature (108 K), this structure has a vinyl group oriented in the opposite direction as a minor part of a disordered structure. Since the disorder disappears at low temperature, it is evidently dynamic and the vinyl group is believed to perform a flip–flop motion in the crystal. When the vinyl group flips in the opposite direction, there is insufficient space in the crystal so that the adjacent vinyl group of the neighbouring molecule also flips in a concerted flip–flop motion.
