  • Research on gold extraction from uytenbogaardtite via in situ microzone analysis

In this study, characterization of uytenbogaardtite and laboratory in situ microzone leaching experiments were conducted in which the leaching characteristics of uytenbogaardtite and native gold were compared. The results show that uytenbogaardtite is more refractory than native gold. For a sodium cyanide concentration of 0.4% and leaching time of 36 h, native gold dissolved completely, whereas the surface of uytenbogaardtite did not change significantly. Thus, we propose a mechanism in which Na2S forms originally on the uytenbogaardtite surface and almost instantaneously a semi-oxidation reaction of Na2S occurs in an aerated alkaline solution. This results in the formation of a passivation sulfur film on the uytenbogaardtite surface that prevents the leaching reagent from reaching the uytenbogaardtite. Increasing oxygen concentration is an effective approach for preventing the forming of passivation film, and any formed passivation film is chemically attacked by cyanide, resulting in higher leach rates of uytenbogaardtite at higher cyanide concentrations.
