PHENYLURETHANE (cas 101-99-5) herbicides such as isopropyl-N-(3-chlorophenyl) carbamate (CIPC) and 4-chloro-2-butynyl-N-(3-chlorophenyl) carbamate (barban) inhibit changes in metabolic state. Thus, the gibberellin-induced synthesis of amylase by aleurone layers of embryo-free barley seeds is blocked, as is the decapitation-induced rise in rate of protein synthesis in hypocotyls of Sesbania exaltata. The latter response is not affected by gibberellin. In contrast, the phenylurethanes act in the same direction as phytokinins, i.e., they preserve chlorophyll levels in excised barley leaves, and maintain synthesis of tyramine methylpherase in roots of barley seedlings.
