  • Reduction of hexachloroiridate (IV) with borohydride
  • Add time:08/05/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

Unlike other noble metals, iridium is not precipitated from neutral or mildly acidic solution by the action of borohydride. However, quantitative precipitation as a mixture of iridium metal and iridium(IV) hydroxide can be achieved by the use of sodium tetrahydroborate at pH 8–10. The rate of the reaction is largely determined by the kinetics of hydrolysis of the tetrahydroborate ion and it appears that the reduction is not brought about by the ion BH−4 but by a hydrolysis product BH(OH)−3. The reaction is first order with respect to the iridium(IV) anion, tetrahydroborate and hydrogen ion. The kinetics were measured radiochemically using192Ir.
