The paper presents the results of a study of the surface modification of fly ash microspheres with titanium dioxide. To improve adhesion of titanium dioxide, the surface of microspheres was pretreated with concentrated alkali solutions followed by low-temperature sintering with mechanically activated mixture of titanium dioxide and alkali. After separation of microspheres, the mixture was hydrolyzed followed by high-temperature drying. The surface of fly ash microspheres were studied by Raman spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The studies have shown the formation of a uniform coating on the surface, consisting mainly of titanium dioxide in the rutile form. The simple instrumental design of the process, based on methods of mechanical activation and sintering, allows us to recommend this method for industrial application.
