Reaction of 1,8-dichloroanthracene with ferrocene and AlCl3Al at 81 or 101 °C affords [η6-(1,8-dichloro-9,10-dihydroantracene)FeCp](PF6) (I) and [η6:η6-(1,8-dichloro-9,10-dihydroanthracene)(FeCp)2](PF6)2 (II). NMR spectral analysis of I and II, isolation of 1,8-dichloro-9,10-dihydroanthracene by pyrolytic sublimation, and X-ray analysis of two crystal forms of I show that the central ring of 1,8-dichloroanthracene is reduced. This agrees with the behavior previously reported for anthracene. NMR supports a trans configuration for dication II.
