A convenient procedure for the preparation of cobaltic acetate in high yields by ozonation of cobaltous acetate in glacial acetic acid is described. Cobaltic acetate has an empirical formula Co2(OAc)4(OH)2(HOAc) and exists largely as a μ-hydroxo dimer in a glacial acetic acid. Cationic carboxylatocobalt(III) species are postulated in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. The spectral and magnetic properties of cobaltic acetate are similar to materials previously isolated from anodic, peracetate or lead(IV) oxidation of cobaltous acetate in glacial acetic acid.
