Three unique phases of hydrous lutetium oxide have been isolated. An aging series under strict controls presents evidence of phase transitions from an amorphous gel to LuOOH. The newly found cubic Lu(OH)3 is one of the isolated phases. Lattice paraments obtained from X-ray diffraction methods are given for lutetium trihydroxide (cubic, Im3) and lutetium oxyhydroxide (monoclinic, P21/m). Preliminary studies relating to similar occuring phenomenon with thulium and ytterbium hydroxide systems are discussed.
