Publisher SummaryPhenylephrine Hydrochloride is 1-m-Hydroxy -α-[ ( methyl amino) methyl] benzyl alcohol hydrochloride. It is also known as 1-α- hydroxy -β-methyl amino-3-hydroxy-1-ethyl benzene hydrochloride. It appear as a white or nearly white, odorless crystals having a bitter taste. Legerlotz was the first to prepare phenylephrine hydrochloride by the hydrogenation of m-hydroxy- ω-methylamino-acetophenone in the presence of colloidal palladium. Bergmann and Sulzbacher synthesized phenylephrine by treating 5-(3'-benzyl oxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2-oxazolidone with 40% hydrochloric acid solution. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is stable as a solid. The degradation o f aqueous solution s has been studiedby El - Shibini et al. This chapter highlights the physical properties, synthesis, stability degradation, metabolic products, and methods of analysis of phenylephrine hydrochloride.
