Following γ-irradiation of 1,3-butadiene adsorbed on silica gel, three kinds of radicals are observed at 77 K. The first is the cation radical [CH2CHCHCH2]+·, whose E.S.R. spectrum consists of a quintet of lines separated by about 11G. The cation radical initiates polymerization of butadiene in the adsorbed state at 77 K. Propagation proceeds cationally. The second radical is the allyl-type radical, CH2CH·HCH2R, which is located at the end of the polymer chains. The radical shows a change of the line profile with temperature. The third radical is also of the allyl type, CH3·HCHCH2, and is a hydrogen atom addition-type radical. This radical is observed either with decreasing butadiene concentration or with a lower preheating temperature of the silica gel.
