The impedance of a PVC membrane of a perchlorate ion-selective electrode (PISE) based on a macrocyclic Schiff base barium complex was investigated. The bulk membrane resistances and ion-exchange currents for the PVC membranes of PISEs based on five ion-exchange materials and five plasticizers are discussed. The PVC membrane prepared using BaL1(ClO42 and dibutyl phthalate in NaClO4 solutions showed a smaller charge-transfer resistance and a larger ion-exchange current than those prepared using other materials and other plasticizers. The result confirms that a large ion-exchange current for the potential-determining ion is essential to show a good Nernstian behaviour in the PISE. The ratio of the ion-exchange currents of an interfering ion and the ClO4-ion was similar numerically to the potentiometric selectivity coefficient of the PISE. Therefore, it was considered that the selectivity of the ion-selective electrode can also be evaluated by means of impedance analysis.
