A convenient synthetic approach has been developed for 4-aryl-2,2′-bipyridine-6-carboxylic acids bearing long chained para-alkoxy residues at the 4-aryl substituents. These ligands have been further used for the preparation of neutral Eu(III), Tb(III), Sm(III) and Dy(III) complexes, and their photophysical properties have been studied. The obtained photophysical data were compared with those previously reported for a number of similar neutral complexes.
