Optical absorption spectra of erbium(III) ion in certain sulphate glasses have been studied for the first time in the UV-VIS and NIR regions. From the observed spectra, the spectroscopic parameters such as Racah (Ek), spin-orbit (ξ4f) and configuration interaction (α) parameters have been calculated by the method of least squares. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Ωλ) were determined from the observed oscillator strengths of the bands. Radiative transition probabilities (A), branching ratios (β), integrated cross sections (Σ) and radiative lifetimes (τ) are calculated for the excited fluorescent levels 4I13/2, 4I11/2, 4I9/2, 4F9/2, 4S3/2, 4F7/2, 4F7/2, 4F5/2, 2H9/2 and 4G11/2 of Er(III) in different sulphate glasses.
