Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) was performed in Langmuir-Blodgett films of 4-octadecyl-4'-nitrostilbene (OANS). The linear and non-linear optical properties are dependent on the preparation, especially on the pH value of the aqueous subphase. In films drawn from a subphase at pH 1.5 the absorption spectrum as well as the second-order hyperpolarizability point to a protonated species. With slightly acidic (pH 5.5) to basic (pH 10) subphase, OANS forms aggregated films with strong molecular interactions. In the aggregated films the SHG efficiency was higher than in films where molecular interactions were suppressed by mixing with arachidic acid. For aggregated OANS a second-order hyperpolarizability β = 2180 × 10−40 m4V−1 was determined.
