We compare the photorefractivity in Poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK)-based composites doped with N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(l)-prolinol (NPP) and its derivative, N-(4-nitrophenyl)pyrrolidine-2-methyl methacrylate (NPPMMA) at the ratio of PVK:NPP (or NPPMMA):2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone: N-ethylcarbazole=35:50:1:15wt.%. Both the effective electro-optic (EO) coefficient and photorefractivity of the sample using NPP as chromophore are much larger than those of the sample containing only NPPMMA. We propose that the methacrylate chain in NPPMMA plays an obstruction to the chromophore orientation. This concludes that a long chain attached to the chromophore is deleterious to the photorefractive effect when a separated plasticizer is used.
