The reaction of the Pr3+ ion with water has been studied at 60°C in 3 m (molal) (Li)ClO4 ionic medium by measurements of the hydrogen ion concentration with a glass electrode. The metal concentration ranged from 0.03 to 1 m, while the acidity was varied from high values, where hydrolysis is negligible, to low enough values for a precipitate of praseodymium(III) hydroxide to form. Hydrolysed solutions were conveniently prepared by coulometric generation of OH− ions. The potentiometric data, which indicate that less than 1% of the metal ion can be transformed into reaction products in clear solutions, have been explained in terms of Pr(OH)2+, Pr2(OH)5+, Pr2(OH)24+ and Pr3(OH)54+ species. Their formation constants in the inert 3 m LiClO4 medium are reported.
