The compound C5H5Cu P(C2H5)3 has been prepared by the reaction of cyclopentadiene and triethylphosphine on cuprous oxide; it is a white crystalline solid stable to water.The compound (C5H5)2Hg has been prepared by the reaction of mercuric chloride with sodium cyclopentadienide in tetrahydrofuran; it is a yellow solid which is stable towards water but decomposes readily thermally and in light.The chemical properties, ultraviolet and infrared spectra of these compounds are described, and are compared with those of cyclopentadienyl-trimethylsilicon and some “sandwich bonded” cyclopentadienyl compounds.
