The liberation of gaseous hydrogen iodide from azeotropic solution with lithium iodide has been experimentally investigated. The optimum extraction efficiency is achieved with the solid dihydrate of the salt, but solutions containing 65 wt% of the salt liberate hydrogen iodide, too. Low reaction temperatures of 150°C or less and reaction times of about 10 min are sufficient. The method is suggested to be an alternative to the well-known phosphoric acid procedure used in some thermochemical water splitting cycles. The heat required for the reconcentration of the diluted salt or acid solutions resulting from the hydrogen iodide liberation procedure is determined by thermal analysis. Some advantages of the salt over the acid method result, since the respective heat requirements and temperatures for the reconcentration procedures are smaller.
