The reaction between hydrazinium difluoride and excess phosphorus pentafluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride yields N2H6(PF6)2 This is unstable at room temperature and decomposes slowly by releasing hydrogen fluoride and phosphorus pentafluoride. The thermal decomposition in a thermoanalyser proceeds through the intermediates N2H5PF6 and NH4PF6 to the gaseous components. N2H6(PF6)2 and the intermediates were characterized by their vibrational spectra. The reaction of hydrazinium(2+) hexafluoroarsenate with hydrazine hydrate yields N2H5AsF6; this was also investigated using thermal analysis and vibrational spectra. The X-ray powder photographs of the new complexes N2H5PF6 and N2H5AsF6 were indexed on the basis of an orthorhombic cell.
