Oligo (styrene-co-chloromethyl styrene) with a molecular weight range of between 1 × 103 and 4 × 103 g mol-1 reacts with potassium 2, 6-di-tert-butylphenoxide salt in dimethyl formamide (DMF) to form polymeric antioxidants. The functionality of such antioxidants was determined by titrating the residual chlorine. When an ammonium salt, such as t−Bu4N+Br-, was added to the reaction medium as a catalyst, the efficiency of functionalization could be improved to up to 96%. The functionality of the polymeric antioxidants increases with a decrease in the ratio of styrene to chloromethyl styrene. Instead of DMF, dioxane/water (201 vv) as the reaction solvent can also give a high yield of functionalization.
