Thermal and photochemical homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and copolymerization of MMA and styrene (S) initiated by cholesteryl oleyl carbonate (CHOC) and cholesteryl 2-ethylhexyl carbonate (CHEHC) were studied in the presence of tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and cobalt-tetraphenylporphyrin (Co-TPP) at 30 and 65°C. The percentage conversions, molecular weights and tacticities of the homopolymers were determined. The percentage conversion and molecular weights of the polymer formed in the presence of TPP were high and in the presence of Co-TPP they were low. In photopolymerization the percentage conversion was high and the molecular weights were low. In the presence of tetraphenyl-porphyrins the tendency for homopolymerization was high for the copolymerization of MMA with S.
