    Publisher SummaryThis chapter describes the chemistry of pyrazoles, imidazoles, triazoles, tetrazoles, and related fused heterocyclic derivatives. Imidazole-containing reagents have found useful applications in a variety of organic transformations. A second generation ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalyst coordinated with 1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene ligand has been utilized in the synthesis of symmetrical trisubstituted olefins by cross-metathesis, ring-opening, and ring-closing metathesis of cycloalkene-yne to give bicyclic compounds and/or dimeric compounds in good yields in the synthesis of carbocyclic methyl and silyl enol ethers and in ring-opening metathesis polymerization in donor solvents. Imidazolidone has been used in enantioselective organocatalytic 1,4-addition of electron-rich benzenes to α-β-unsaturated aldehydes. Several novel imidazoline catalysts were screened for the organocatalytic asymmetric conjugate addition of nitroalkanes to α-β unsaturated enones.
