Kinetics of the reduction of platinum (IV) was studied by ascorbic acid in an hydrochloric acid medium. The reaction was found to have first order dependence in ascorbic acid and hexachloroplatinate ion. H+ ion showed a retarding effect and the rate of reaction varied linearly with [H+]−1. Influence of ionic strength and dielectric constant was studied which indicated an interaction between two similarly charged ions in the rate determining step. A suitable mechanism of the reduction processes has been proposed.
