The absorption spectra of 4f electron transitions of the neodymium and erbium complexes with benzoyl-indan-1,3-dione and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide have been studied by normal and derivative spectrophotometry. The molar absorptivity of 4f electron transitions at the maximum absorption bands are 84.7 for neodymium and 77.3 for erbium. Their derivative molar absorptivity are 627 and 538, respectively. The linear dynamic range extents to 20 μg cm−3 of neodymium and erbium, and the detection limits (signal to noise ratio=2) are 0.05 and 0.08 μg cm−3 for neodymium and erbium, respectively. The relative standard deviations evaluated from seven independent determinations of 5.0 μg cm−3 of neodymium and erbium are 1.2 and 1.0%, respectively. The method has been used for the determination of neodymium and erbium in mixed rare earths with satisfactory results.
