Two novel binary and ternary Europium (III) perchlorate complexes were synthesized. The binary complex was prepared with bis(benzylsulfinyl)methane as ligand, and the ternary complex was with bis(benzylsulfinyl)methane as first ligand and 1,10-Phenanthroline as second ligand. They were characterized by element analysis, molar conductivity, coordination titration analysis, IR, TG-DSC, 1HNMR and UV spectra. The results indicated that the composition of binary and ternary complexes was EuL2.5(ClO4)33H2O and Eu2L4phen(ClO4)612H2O (L=C6H5CH2SOCH2SOCH2C6H5), respectively. The fluorescent spectra illustrated that the complexes displayed characteristic Europium (III) ion fluorescence in solid state, indicating the ligands favored energy transfer to the excitation state energy level of it. The strongest characteristic fluorescence emission intensity of the ternary system was 1.87 times as strong as that of the binary system. The fluorescent quantum yields of the Eu (III) ternary and binary complexes were also calculated. Additionally, the phosphorescence spectra and the luminescence mechanisms of the complexes were studied and explained.
