Infrared spectra of ammonia and ammonia-d3 isolated in a nitrogen matrix have been recorded between 4000 and 200 cm−1. Spectra were studied as functions of temperature between 6 and 20 K and of concentration. The effects of temperature variation are partly irreversible and partly reversible. The irreversible effects are due to the formation of ammonia dimer and polymers. The reversible effect, consisting of a low temperature split of the L-symmetrical bands, might be due to a rotational libration round the symmetry axis of the ammonia molecule.
