This work describes an experimental study of the electrical properties of collodion/n-ethylaniline membranes. The membranes were polarized in an electric field of 10 kV/cm at 70°C. Collodion membranes containing n-ethylaniline exhibited thermally-induced discharge currents (TDC); no TDC was observed when n-ethylaniline was not present in the collodion membrane. Once polarized, the collodion/n-ethylaniline membranes retain their polarization for several weeks when they are stored at room temperature. TDC's were also observed for collodion/n-ethylaniline membranes that had not experienced high polarization fields. In this case, both positive and negative TDC were observed, whereas only positive TDC's were detected in samples that had initially been polarized.
