Urinary 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid was low in 19 children with rheumatic fever and other collagen diseases as compared to 16 controls; its immediate precursors, the meta-catecholamines, were low too, though in a less pronounced way.The excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid was plotted against that of meta-catecholamines; the results suggest decreased monoamine oxidase activity in the patients.Evidence is also presented that 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate cannot be transformed spontaneously to 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelate. This latter seems to be produced exclusively by the enzymic transformation of meta-catecholamines in vivo.
